Herrington dies at 44

DANNY Herrington, one of Scottish rugby's most colourful characters, has died after losing his long fight with cancer. He was 44.

The former Scotland A prop was a well-kent figure throughout the game, and was famously part of the formidable "Tillicoultry Troglodytes", a name coined to describe the front-row he formed with Bob Cairney and John Manson at Hillfoots, his first senior club.

He went on to join Dundee HSFP and was a stalwart for the Mayfield club as they returned to Scottish rugby's top flight. Herrington played three times for Scotland A, against the All Blacks in 1993, in the victory over France A in 1994 and the narrow loss to France A in 1995.

Having made his debut for North and Midlands in 1990, Herrington was a key figure in their rise to become district champions. He was part of the first Caledonia squad and made the last of his 47 district appearances against Glasgow at Rubislaw in January 1998.

He continued to play with Kirkcaldy and only stopped three years ago.

Herrington is survived by his wife Morag, four children and two grandchildren.
