Golf: Reid and Gordon catch the eye in Champions bid

SCOTT REID and Lindsay Gordon chalked up two of the best results in the opening round of this year's Lothians Champion of Champions tournament.

Reid, representing Lothian & Borders Police, went to Royal Burgess and beat Sandy Gray by two holes, while the evergreen Gordon, Gullane's champion last year, made the most of home advantage to claim a notable scalp as he beat Kingsknowe's Allyn Dick by one hole.

Bruntsfield Allied's David Hardie also recored an eye-catching win as he travelled to Baberton and won on the last green there against Andy Laurence.

Duddingston members Gus Santana and John Shepherd had contrasting fortunes in two other opening-round matches in an event that culminates this year at North Berwick.

Representing Duddingston, Santana overcame a trip down the coast to go through at the 20th against Rhodes' Colin Pattison, but Shepherd, the Temple title holder, went down 3 and 2 at Turnhouse at the hands of Olly McCrone. Bidding to keep the title at Turnhouse after Steven Armstrong's win last year, McCrone is also at home in the second round, where he'll face Grant Milne after the Luffness New man progressed with a 2 and 1 success over Gordon Leitch (Carrick Knowe).

Stephen Easingwood, the losing finalist in 2009, fell at the first hurdle this time around, the Bank of Scotland giant losing 3 and 2 at home to Swanston New left-hander Malcolm Campbell. A mouth-watering second-round clash will involve Keith Young of Glencorse and
