Edinburgh University students top after Whitehill Welfare victory

The students of Edinburgh University sit proudly at the top of the Central Taxis Premier Division after beating Whitehill Welfare 1-0 thanks to a 20-yard strike from substitute Calum Murray.

The University have won all three of their opening league games although they had to rely on their goalkeeper, Mark Tait, to save a penalty from Ross Aitchison in stoppage time.

Selkirk have moved into second position, their highest placing since league reconstruction in 1986, with a 3-1 victory against Civil Service Strollers. Jason Inglis, Ross McManus and Grant Gass were the Souters scorers.

In the Image Printers East of Scotland Qualifying Cup a shock was on the cards when First Division Gala Fairydean led favourites Spartans 2-0 fifteen minutes into the second half with goals from Alan Smith and Chris Anderson. However, goals from Keith McLeod and Omar Kader took the game into extra-time where a double from Donal Henretty won it for Spartans.

Strikes from Coldstream's David Brown, Stephen Doohan, John Crawford and Fraser Henderson saw them progress 4-2 at the expense of Stirling University while a goal from Steve Degnan saw Gretna 2008 defeat Preston Athletic 1-0.
