Cowan tools up for tough test this term

DAVID COWAN reckons life is going to be more difficult for Spartans in the South Division this season after losing their element of surprise.

The Junior new boys pushed Broxburn and Tranent all the way last term and kicked off the latest league campaign with an incredible 9-3 win over Edinburgh United last weekend.

Cowan is delighted to have strengthened his squad with the addition of namesake Mark from Brechin, Rhys Smith from Dunfermline, Ross McKenzie from Newtongrange and Harthill duo Clark Campbell and Gary Shanks.

But he reckons Spartans, who face Livingston United away tomorrow, are going to have to up their game to be back in the title shake-up this season.

"We were probably a bit of a surprise package last season - but not any more," said Cowan.

"I feel we've added some more quality to the squad over the summer and I've had a great reaction as well from the players who were already here.

"We want to be in the mix again, but it won't be easy as Tranent, Fauldhouse and a number of other teams have also strengthened their squads."
