Caneing: David Florence the C1 machine

EDINBURGH canoeist David Florence is plotting further success at this summer's World and European Slalom Championships after qualifying for the British team by winning all three of the recent selection races in the C1 Canadian class.

The 27-year-old Forth Canoe Club star, a former Roseburn Primary and Stewart's-Melville pupil will be one of the favourites at next month's Europeans in Bratislava.

He said: "Peaking for several major events doesn't concern me too much, although the biggest focus will be on the Worlds and sharpening up for that.

"I was fifth at both the European and World Championships last year. I paddled well but was just on the wrong side of getting a medal. I wanted to be World Cup champion for the most consistent performer, and I did that, so it wasn't a bad year."

After Florence's Olympic heroics, he signed to Red Sky Management in Edinburgh and recently secured a sponsorship deal with Lloyd's Register.

He said: "I'm really lucky to get support from these guys right up to the London Olympics.

"The 2012 Olympics are very far away, but I'm aware of it and very excited by it. Winning an Olympic medal was all I ever wanted, but having a London Games is so exciting."
