Athletics: Murray secures her Commonwealth run

Capital star Freya Murray was one of two more Scots to achieve the minimum qualifying standards for Scotland's Commonwealth Games team for Delhi at the weekend.

Murray (Edinburgh AC) clocked 15:31.17 seconds for 5000 metres in a meeting in Brasschaat, Belgium, a personal best by 1.22sec and the second time she has been inside the selection target time of 15:35.00.

The 26-year-old engineer finished second in the race behind Mika Yoshikawa of Japan. "I'm so relieved to have got the time again," gasped Murray, who defeated both Grace Allison USA) and early pacemaker Christine Bardelle (France) who were third and fourth. "Brasschaat didn't let me down, it's my pb track," she added. But fellow Scot Laura Kenney was not so lucky, finishing well back in 16:06.18.

Glasgow University student Angus McInroy took his chance in style, smashing Pitreavie star Darrin Morris's 19-year-old record when he heaved the discus out to 58.77 metres in a meeting in Donnas, Italy on Saturday. McInroy,23, also easily exceeded the Commonwealth Games qualifying mark of 56m, reaching 57.68m with his opening throw and improving to the new record with his sixth and final effort. McInroy already had a throw of 56.03m to his credit so has now bagged the necessary two qualifying marks for Delhi ahead of next weekend's Scottish Championships at Pitreavie.

Sadly Edinburgh's Darren Gauson failed to run in the British Milers Club meeting at Solihull on Saturday night and his chances of making Delhi must now hang on a knife-edge.

Though not in Delhi contention, Mark Mitchell (EAC) was again inside 1:50.00 for 800m in Solihull, clocking 1:49.97 ahead of Graham Oudney (Pitreavie), 1:50.16, but there was more disappointment for Lasswade's Guy Learmonth who was disqualified in the final of the All-England Schools event in Birmingham after winning his heat the previous day in 1:52.44. Learmonth, 18, was disqualified, for a push.
