Fire near Glasgow Central Station causes major disruption

The fire broke out near Central Station.

Firefighters are tackling a blaze which has caused major disruption near one of the country’s busiest train stations.

The fire broke out near Central Station in Glasgow at about 4.30pm in nearby Union Street.

The road was closed as five Scottish Fire and Rescue vehicles dealt with the blaze, which appeared to be on the second floor of a building.

No casualties have been reported, with police and fire officials launching an investigation into the incident.

A Glasgow City Council statement read: “Due to a building fire, Union Street is closed to all traffic at its junction with Gordon Street.

“Road users are advised to avoid this area and delays should be expected.”

A fire service spokesperson said: “At 16:27 today Johnstone Fire control received a call reporting a fire in Union Street Glasgow. Four fire appliances were mobilised.

“The first crews arrived within minutes and quickly located and extinguished a small fire in a single room on the second floor of the four storey building.

“Crews remain in attendance and firefighters wearing breathing apparatus are carrying out systematic tactical ventilation of all floors using positive pressure fans to clear smoke and check the premises. No further information is available at this time.”
