Fox fears Brown will remain in power

THERE is a "distinct possibility" that Gordon Brown will be Prime Minister after the general election, a senior Tory warned yesterday.

Shadow defence secretary Liam Fox predicted the forthcoming campaign would be "difficult", and told party activists they would have to "fight very hard" to win.

Dr Fox was speaking as a new poll showed the gap between Labour and the Conservatives has narrowed to just two points – the closest for more than two years.

The YouGov poll puts the Conservatives on 37 per cent, two points down on last week, while Labour were up two on 35 per cent. The Liberal Democrats were unchanged on 17 per cent.

If repeated at the general election – expected on or before 6 May – the results would be likely to leave Labour as the largest party.

"If people want change… they have to go out and make change happen," said Dr Fox.
