Eggs are thrown at Queen and Duke

TWO people were arrested by police last night after eggs were thrown at the Queen’s car in Nottingham, Buckingham Palace said.

Two eggs hit the Royal Rolls-Royce as the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh were driving to the National Ice Centre.

The egg attack happened about 20 yards from the centre where the Olympic ice stars, Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean, waited to welcome the Royal visitors.

Nottinghamshire Police detained two people in the large crowd after the eggs were thrown.

The Queen and Duke, on the latest leg of the nationwide Jubilee tour, seemed unfazed by the incident. The eggs hit the car’s windscreen and door.

Earlier in the day, she slipped off her shoes to enter a British mosque for the first time. Inside the prayer room at the Scunthorpe Islamic Centre, she asked: "Which direction is Mecca?"

The Queen chose the north-Lincolnshire centre as the first visit to a British mosque by a reigning monarch after it was attacked in the anti-Islamic backlash following 11 September.
