TRAFFIC in west Edinburgh was snarled today by two serious accidents, causing delays on the approach to Edinburgh Airport and getting the bank holiday getaway off to a stressful start.

Traffic was diverted after two lorries collided on the A8 just outside the airport around 2.45pm - flipping one of the vehicles onto its side.

Police have closed off the west-bound ramp heading onto the motorway, with traffic being directed via the Newbridge Roundabout and onto the east-bound ramp. Air travellers reported major delays.

A police spokeswoman said neither driver had been injured in the crash.

In a separate incident, two people were taken to hospital after a motorbike and a car collided on a motorway at around 5.20pm.

The accident, which happened on the A71 around 400 metres east of Kirknewton, saw a man suffer broken bones and a woman treated for shock at the scene.

The woman was later taken to St John’s Hospital for further treatment.

A fire service spokesman confirmed two pumps had attended the crash, closing off the road for around an hour.
