School leaving age disputed

A HEADTEACHER has called for the school leaving age to be scrapped.

David MacKenzie, headteacher of Linlithgow Academy, believes getting rid of the condition for pupils to stay on until 16 could provide them with more options for the future.

He argues giving pupils the chance to study in a mixture of schools, colleges and training providers would better meet the needs of 21st century education.

Speaking at an awards ceremony at his school, Mr MacKenzie said: "This is about giving pupils the choices they need. We have not had a major review of education since the 70s. When you come to the end of third year at 15, it is a natural break to continue your education somewhere else."
