Sandwich shop served up £4000 fine for droppings

THE operators of a sandwich shop in Forrest Road have been fined £4000 after inspectors found it was littered with mice droppings.

The Subway store, operated at the time by SS North Ltd, was reported after a member of the public noticed droppings on the way to the toilets.

Inspectors visited in January last year and found a large number of droppings throughout the premises, including some on food and packaging.

The manager agreed to close the shop voluntarily so it could be cleaned and pest treatment work carried out. The shop has since changed ownership and was last month found by inspectors to be observing high standards of food hygiene.

At Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Friday, SS North Ltd pleaded guilty to two charges.

City environment leader Councillor Robert Aldridge said: "Residents and visitors to Edinburgh are entitled to expect the highest standards of food hygiene.

"Thanks to the vigilance and hard work shown by our Food Safety Enforcement staff, we can send out a clear message."
