Pupils lap up Tom Kitchin's masterclass in cooking

MICHELIN star chef Tom Kitchin treated primary school children to a taste of some seasonal Scottish food during a cooking demonstration at his Edinburgh restaurant.

The youngsters at Granton Primary School enjoyed slurping oysters from their shells as they learned more about the wide variety of produce that comes from Scotland and its surrounding waters.

The chef, who champions using fresh local produce from his restaurant, The Kitchin, in Leith, is backing the Scottish Government's seasonal food campaign.

He said: "We have access to an outstanding natural larder here in Scotland. Fresh, seasonal produce is the essence of good cooking and ensuring that we buy foods that are in season also encourages us to bring more variety to our diet."

The ten and 11-year-old pupils were given a masterclass in making the most of Scotland's natural produce as an array of colourful, locally sourced produce was laid out in front of them, including a large live lobster delivered fresh from the sea that morning.

The Scottish Government is keen that children learn healthy and environmentally friendly eating habits, which they can carry into adulthood.
