Police name 'Good Samaritan' killed in road crash

POLICE have named the man who was killed while trying to help an elderly crash victim near Linwood.

Thomas Rarity, 47, from Bathgate, West Lothian, and another motorist went to the aid of a female passenger who crashed on the eastbound carriageway of the A737 in Renfrewshire.

Mr Rarity was hit by a van and died at the scene while the motorist who also assisted is in a critical condition in Glasgow's Southern General Hospital.

The 71-year-old driver remains in a stable condition in Paisley's Royal Alexandra Hospital.

The pensioner's Polo car crossed the road's central reservation and collided with an oncoming Seat Leon.

After the accident, the two men stopped their cars on the eastbound carriageway of the A737, then crossed over to the westbound carriageway to help.

An oncoming van then struck the pair, killing Mr Rarity.
