SCOTTISH Government minister Fergus Ewing (Letters, 13 February) prefers not to use any numbers at all when discussing Scotland’s renewable energy potential but goes for such things as Scotland having a “significant proportion of European Union energy resources”, whatever that means.

Our late, great, Lord Kelvin used to repeatedly state that scientific arguments were worth heeding only if measurements were available.

Come, Mr Ewing, you are our energy minister and must surely have the resources for this. The results might, however, be disappointing (for example, Norway, not in the EU, but still in Europe, from rainfall, land area and topography has about 20 times Scotland’s hydro capability).
