Safety first

The SNP is revving at full throttle with a cry to follow it to the land of milk and honey; only a short leap of faith across the referendum ravine. Just hop in their sidecar, shut your eyes and shout: “Yes!”

The bald reality, however, is we just don’t know how difficult or how long that jump would be.

At the time we vote we cannot know how much fuel Salmond’s negotiations – with the UK, EU, Nato, financial markets – would fill the tank of an independent Scotland. Gordon Brown and Better Together
have opened a solid bridge to drive to a better Scotland, built on successful devolution within a United Kingdom.

This bridge will take us quickly and safely to a stronger Scottish Parliament within a secure and stable UK, and the same social and economic benefits offered by Salmond.

We do not need to take risks on credit ratings. We do not need to waste a decade unravelling a successful state before we begin.

We can achieve a fairer, and a more prosperous, Scotland without the leap of separation and its risk of a crash, splash and to be washed down the river in a current of uncertainties.
