The council pay battle continues, while drivers face a ban from the Shore and a new bad weather strategy is on the way

Trade unions are warning of strike action if the council forces through a pay modernisation deal.

Difficult times call for difficult decisions. Local council employees welcome to the real world, you will still have jobs– not on the same terms and with the same perks but jobs nonetheless. Better than a measly 65 a week or so on JSA.

If the council had had the gumption to negotiate properly they might have arrived at a deal with the unions that everyone could live with.

Let's face it this was all the work of the unions bringing equal pay claims in the first place. Not thinking that right-minded councils would level down benefits so everyone was the same they greedily thought that councils would level up the benefits.

Council workers have had an easy life for years, you still have a job, only difference now is you will probably have to account for your daily activities to actually justify being there.

Come 7 May, the councils nationwide will be "restructuring" pay across the board and in some cases, will include P45s.

Unimpressed one

And everyone can look forward to a reduction in services, amenities and choice.

The council is set to look into banning traffic from the Shore.

I'd love to see the large lorries and empty double-decker buses off the streets. A lot of damage to the fabric of the roads results from these users.

Car-free Shore? would this be like "car-free" Princes Street which has hundreds of cars driving through the no entry signs every day. No point in grand plans which will have no enforcement.

I can see the logic of banning heavy lorries (but what about deliveries and trade vehicles?), but cars! How do these businesses think a significant proportion of their customers travel?

The Shore was closed to traffic for one day and we have people stating it was a great success. It was a great "success" because one day was not an inconvenience try it for a month then you will see if people think its a success.

I've said it before, I'll say it again – what about all the residents' parking which can only be accessed from the Shore? What about the businesses which have private parking on the Shore? What about those of us who bought houses in nice areas with plentiful on-street parking?

Pairbs, The Shore!

The council is drawing up new plans to deal with severe weather.

All these promises and still they cant empty bins on time.

New strategy . . . I think its called being prepared. Farmernot

Edinburgh should take a leaf out of the book of Scotland's rural councils and also enter into arrangements with farmers on the outskirts of Edinburgh who would keep Edinburgh's rural roads and lanes open.
