Letter: Stuck in low gear

I read with interest your account of the Scotsman Conference, chaired by Bill Jamieson (8 March).

It would seem that things have not moved on much since I left school in 1954. The careers advisers at my secondary school (and not a "posh" school either) showed a complete ignorance of what an engineer did, obviously believing that I wanted to muck about with cars or something of the sort.

Frankly, they were not interested in any professions other than teaching, the law, medicine or university research. What a pity that in the past 50-odd years, the schools and colleges have learned nothing.

In spite of the lack of encouragement, I persisted with my interest in the subject.
