Letter: Penalty saved

Mr Mike Shepherd, the chairman of the Friends of Union Terrace Gardens group, has been taken to task in some quarters over his belief that the recent referendum vote on the plans for the gardens was seriously flawed and when asked if he would have said the same things if the vote had gone his way he replied: “We would have accepted the vote.”

Instead of being vilified I think Mr Shepherd should be applauded for being refreshingly honest. Perhaps I can introduce an analogy to all this.

When a football team wins a game yet were denied two penalties the winning manager/coach is unlikely to approach the referee to complain, yet if in the same game the same manager/coach had lost the match he would have been first in the queue to complain to the referee about his flawed performance in not awarding the penalties.
