Letter: Island alone

Three years ago dozens of packed tour coaches turned round at Kyle of Lochalsh, having refused to pay more than £48 for exorbitant bridge tolls to Skye. Thanks to Alex Salmond and the SNP all bridge tolls which were a burden to so many have stopped.

Readers of Conde Nash Traveller magazine have declared Skye as one of the top ten holiday attractions throughout Europe and beating Mediterranean resorts (your report, 25 October).

We should give credit where it is due. It is indeed such a pity that the former Chancellor, Alistair Darling, saw fit that rural areas of France qualified for cheaper fuel but vetoed such a concession for the isolated Highlands and islands of Scotland.
