Letter: Chinese furore

DOESN'T the "Chinese furore over the Nobel Laureate" raise an interesting issue? (International , 12 October).

China combines a successful free market economy with a repressive authoritarian regime. It was once suggested liberalisation of trade and free markets would inexorably lead to the recognition of human rights. The Chinese experience graphically shows political freedom isn't a necessary condition for economic freedom.
