Legacy betrayed

The events and circumstances surrounding the tragically abortive rescue of a dying 44- year-old woman (your report, 5 March) suggest that normal workplace health and safety constraints are irrelevant to unusually desperate situations requiring urgent constructive action.

What transpired around the mouth of the disused mine shaft at Galston, Ayrshire was unbelievably frustrating and heart-rending. All of that appears in stark contrast to that part of this country's more glorious heritage founded upon the heroic willingness of selfless individuals to demonstrate initiative and courage in their determination to assist others.
