Help at the end
Margo MacDonald is aware of our differences of opinion. Nevertheless, we applaud the political courage she has shown, in seeking to enshrine in law a legal principle supported by the vast majority. The process of debate and refinement of her bill, as with all progressive legislation, should not be rushed and I fully support the debate this consultation will provide.
The legalisation of assisted dying still faces entrenched moral opposition from some quarters. No matter how effective the safeguards, assisted dying will always be seen as wrong by a small but vocal minority. We welcome a full and frank debate over safeguards yet, sadly, there is little point in debating with opponents who have no intention of conceding the moral case.
