In response to John Eoin Douglas’s letter (29 September), I would suggest instead that the UK should ban male drivers. The societal benefits would be manifold.

Roads’ budgets could be slashed due to less wear and tear on the resulting empty roads, unemployment would be cut at a stroke as the more affluent rushed to employ female drivers, and the school run would become a thing of the past, leading to increased juvenile fitness.

That it would also make a major contribution to road safety goes without saying!

IN LISTING the benefits of a ban on women drivers, John Eoin Douglas omits one important consideration.

Who but my wife would be available to drive me to and from parties, so that I can drink while she remains sober?

John Eoin Douglas comments on the Saudi authorities’ refusal to let women drive and he suggests several financial savings and also comments that our roads would be safer if the UK followed suit. I suggest that The Scotsman should strike a new medal named “for courage in letter writing” and award the first one to Mr Douglas.

I just hope it is not awarded posthumously.
