Christian values
John McTernan (Perspective, 15 August) comments perceptively: “You would have thought that a Christian country would be concerned about the persecution and execution of co-religionists abroad. Apparently not.”
Belief in the core teachings of Christianity and active commitment as a disciple of Christ are found in only a small minority of UK citizens, so any labelling of the UK as a “Christian country” is more nostalgic than descriptive.
The general tone of mainstream British society is becoming more explicitly anti-Christian, seeing believers as superstitious opponents of the great secular progressive project. So why should we expect the British political elite to have a special concern for persecuted Christians?
