Cash for politics

I am surprised there is not more outrage at taxpayers' cash being used to support a political party, whether £2,000 via a Glasgow quango (your report, 17 March) or trade unions (Letters, 15 March) receiving £96 million from us since 1998 and paying a roughly similar sum to Labour.

Is the government, by effectively financing its own party with our money through union officials, not emulating the old Soviet Union?
