In 2013, Andy Murray became the first British man to win Wimbledon for 77 years

Andy Murray admits he made mistakes in his early career. However, given he has gone on to win three grand slam titles and two Olympic gold medals, he clearly found a way to navigate through the pitfalls.

Other budding sports stars are not so fortunate. Media hype may be partly to blame but there is an impression Scotland produces promising talents who somehow don’t quite make it.

So Murray’s venture into sports management is welcome. Young sportspeople not only need excellent coaching, but good advice on coping with the associated pressures.

As a wealthy man, he doesn’t need the money and his motivation seems to be more about creating a lasting legacy.

The name of his agency, 77 Sports Management, is a reference to the 77 years between Fred Perry’s last men’s Wimbledon title in 1936 and Murray’s in 2013.

Perhaps he can help close some other growing gaps: the 19 years since Scotland’s football team last qualified for a major tournament, the 18 years since Scotland’s rugby team won a grand slam or a Scot won golf’s Open Championship.
