Human remains discovered inside cottage following fire

DETECTIVES said yesterday they had found what they believe to be human remains after a fire at a cottage.

Firefighters were sent to the scene of the fire at Hillhead Cottage, Balfour, Fettercairn, at around midnight on Wednesday.

Grampian Police said Jane Murray, 78, lived at the cottage. Investigations into the fire are ongoing and the remains have not yet been formally identified.

Police said the family of Murray, who may have been in the cottage at the time of the fire, have been made aware of the discovery.

Detectives said Murray was independent and had a varied circle of friends. They said they are keen to hear from anyone who may know her and her routine.

Detective Inspector Neil Cameron, from Grampian Police, said: "We are aware that Jane may have had a close male friend, Greg or Craig, who was outwith the family circle. Despite our inquiries, I'm disappointed that we have not been able to trace this person and advise him of our inquiries."

It is believed the man is in his 70s, lives in Aberdeen and may be unaware of the fire. He is not being treated as a suspect in connection with the fire or the discovery of the remains.
