Group drums up lessons for children

MORE children will get the chance to learn Scotland's national instrument following a funding boost by the East Lothian charity.

East Lothian Pipes and Drums Trust has pledged to provide 300,000 to extend its tutoring programme for the instruments for three years.

To date, more than 200 youngsters have tried their hand at the pipes and Highland drums in free lessons.

Trust spokesman David Johnston said: "Piping and drumming is more than just music - it opens all sorts of opportunities and helps develop teamwork, self-confidence and commitment."

Mr Johnston revealed the trust had been in lengthy negotiations with the local authority to extend its work to all county schools.

However, the council was unable to provide the funding required in the current financial climate.
