Fished-up mine detonated

A SUSPECTED wartime mine was detonated in a controlled explosion after a fisherman found it and took part of it home.

Andrew Innes discovered what he believed to be a mine in his nets after fishing in the waters in the Cromarty Firth.

Royal Navy bomb disposal experts were called in and a 50-metre cordon was placed around Mr Innes' home in Shandwick, near Tain in Ross-Shire. About 20 houses were evacuated while the device was examined.

Mr Innes, 54, said he had placed part of the mine in a garden shed and had told the fisheries office in Caithness.
