Family push for inuiry into Briton's Dubai death

The family of a British tourist who died in police custody in Dubai said his body appeared battered and bruised, suggesting he was beaten before his death.

Steven and Susanne Brown, the brother and sister-in-law of Lee Brown, heard he had been left covered in blood and found him "black and blue", they said.

Mr Brown, 39, was arrested after being accused of trying to throw a female housekeeper off a balcony at the luxury Burj Al Arab hotel. Local authorities said he hit his head against a wall while resisting officers on 12 April, but this did not cause his death.

Speaking to a TV news station, Mr Brown's brother told how he learnt of the injuries. He said: "I've picked it up (the phone] and the guy said 'are you a relative of Lee Brown?' I said yes. He says 'I don't want to worry you but he's in Bur Dubai prison...'

"They've beaten him and he's covered in blood on the floor. He's chained up.'"

A post-mortem examination carried out by the Dubai authorities has concluded that he died from choking on his own vomit.
