Person dies after being hit by train at Scottish railway station

A person has died after being struck by a train at a station in Lanarkshire.

The tragedy happened at about 5.30pm on Thursday at Whifflet railway station, between Holytown and Coatbridge Central.

ScotRail posted about the incident on its Twitter page alerting passengers to the temporary travel disruptions.

Emergency services attended, but the person was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers are currently investigation to find out the identity of the deceased in order to let their next of kin know.

A spokesman from British Transport Police said: “British Transport Police were called to the line near Whifflet railway station at 5.34pm yesterday (29/10) following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

“Paramedics also attended, however sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene.

“This incident is not being treated as suspicious and officers are working to identify the deceased and notify their next of kin.”

Trains were affected for about an hour.
