'˜Cragfast' climbers rescued 600ft up Cairngorms peak

Two climbers have been rescued from a Cairngorms mountain after becoming stuck 600ft from the ground.

Mountain rescue crews say the men, who were “soloing” or not using any ropes, called for help after becoming cragfast on Jacob’s Ladder around 4pm on Saturday.

A team of 24 Cairngorm Mountain Rescue workers were called and secured ropes before pulling them up to a plateau.

The route is usually a grade 1 winter climb, but because of the recent weather conditions it was regarded as grade 3 when they became stuck

A spokesman said: “Two climbers soloing Jacob’s Ladder, a grade 1 winter climb. Unfortunately, in thin conditions like now, the route is more like grade 3, so the guys found themselves cragfast.”

One of the rescuers abseiled to the men and secured them with ropes while other members of the team climbed up to them.

A coastguard helicopter assisted in the search and they were then flown off the mountain, cold but unhurt.
