Community News: Hallowe'en open day at waste centre

A FREE Hallowe'en-themed family open day is to be held at a recycling centre in the Capital.

The "Waste Aware" education cabin at Seafield Community Recycling Centre is holding the open day this Saturday. It will include a guided tour of the centre, a Hallowe'en mask workshop and a look at the insects that live in a compost heap, as well as competitions and activities.

The free open day will run from 11am to 3pm this Saturday.

City council department recognised

The city council's services for communities department has been given the Government's official 'customer service excellence' accreditation.

The department provides many of the council's front-line services such as housing, parks, libraries, community safety, street cleaning and refuse collection.

Mark Turley, director of services for communities, said: "I would like to thank all our hard-working and dedicated staff."

Moredun launches healthy eating campaign

A HEALTHY eating campaign has been launched in Moredun.

Local people have come up with six healthy recipes, one for each month of the campaign, which will be available free at the Scotmid store on Moredun Park Road.

They have also designed posters to go on billboards, highlighting the difference in price between ready-made and home-cooked meals. The project is coordinated by the South Edinburgh Healthy Living Initiative with help from the supermarket chain.

Author to introduce new book

Author Martyn Murray will introduce his book The Storm Leopard at Blackwell bookshop on South Bridge on November 4. The book traces his journey through Africa from the Cape to the Serengeti Plains. Tickets are free from the shop. The event begins at 6.30pm.

Enjoy charity fun at Asda

Asda is hosting a charity fun day at its Chesser store on Saturday, November 6, from noon. Shoppers can enjoy a homegrown fashion show featuring George garments, face painting and an extra special hamper raffle. All money raised from the event will be donated to Children In Need.

Backstage help needed

Volunteers are sought by Dance Base to help with its Christmas show at the Queens Hall. Five people are needed to help backstage during rehearsals, which run all day on December 5, and for the performance on the evening of December 6. For more information email [email protected].
