A 51-year-old who died doing a charity walk on Ben Nevis has been named by police as Gerard Boyle, from the Glasgow area.

The alarm was raised at 12.25pm on Saturday when Mr Boyle was reported to have collapsed on his way up the mountain path.

A rescue helicopter from RAF Lossiemouth was within 20 minutes of Fort William and was able to airlift the casualty straight off the mountain to hospital.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: “The man was tended to at the scene by his companions at two off-duty doctors before the helicopter arrived.

“The man was thereafter airlifted to the Belford Hospital where, on arrival, he was pronounced dead.”
