Dundee's stunning Eden Project takes step forward as images reveal waterfront transformation

Striking images set out the vision of bringing the Cornwall eco-attraction to Scotland with hopes to lodge a planning application by the end of the year.

The Dundee Eden Project has taken another step forward as a planning application is prepared for city’s latest visitor attraction.

A former gasworks on the city’s waterfront is set to be transformed into a vast new eco-landmark under plans to attract Cornwall’s world-famous Eden Project to Scotland.

The project team is due to lodge a planning application later this year with a new round of community events announced in a bid to bring city residents to the heart of discussions around the bold development.

Five consultation events will be held, beginning on September 22 and finishing on November 7 at V&A Dundee, which sits just under a mile from the proposed site at East Dock Street.

Darren Hoare, the Eden Project’s Head of Programme Delivery, said: “We have had a fantastic summer of co-creation events in Dundee. We have met some incredible people and been bowled over by the ideas and inspiration the people of Dundee have brought to the events.

“Adding more dates to the calendar – including online events for those unable to come along in person – will extend the opportunity to get involved to even more people. We can’t wait to see you all.”

The project, which has been backed by the Scottish Government, Dundee City Council and Dundee University, is expected to generate more than £27m a year for the Dundee economy.

A series of walled gardens is planned to be created at the brick-walled site on East Dock Street, which would become the “eastern anchor” of Dundee’s £1 billion waterfront regeneration. Other “embassies” could be created around the city.

Eden Project Dundee is planned to have nine themes – Healers, Growers, Navigators, Myth-Makers, Noticers, Alchemists, Celebrators, Menders and Re-Sourcerors – inspired by the city’s historic trades.

Visitors will be able to explore connections between the human race and the natural world, a zone showcasing new ways to grow plants and learn about alternatives to mining.

If the plans are approved, it is hoped construction work on the attraction could start next year.
