1,000th school green flagged

A PRIMARY school yesterday became the 1,000th in Scotland to win a green award. St Joseph's in Milngavie received a Green Flag, the highest award in the Eco-Schools scheme,

an international initiative. Nearly a third of Scottish state schools have a Green Flag.

Visiting the East Dunbartonshire primary, education secretary Mike Russell said it was "highly encouraging" that schools were "demonstrating a real commitment to sustainability and greener thinking".

Lunnasting Primary in Shetland was the first Scottish school to win a Green Flag, in 1995.
