Farming firm reaps growth in profits

CONTINENTAL Farmers, the eastern European agricultural business run by Scottish farmer Mark Laird and backed by former foreign secretary Sir Malcolm Rifkind, grew profits from £314,000 to £1 million in the six months to 30 June.

The firm, which joined the Alternative Investment Market in November, said revenues had risen by 11 per cent to €4.4m (£3.8m) thanks to the sale of crops harvested in 2010.

The company added that its current wheat and oil seed rape harvest had been successfully completed in Poland and Ukraine despite poor weather.
