Street event becomes a rat run

Weekends in Glasgow might be better known for retail therapy, but yesterday the city was flooded by hundreds of people looking for adventure.

More than 900 men and women took part in a 10k competition called the Riverside Rat Race. As well as running along the banks of the River Clyde, competitors had to scramble under cargo nets, kayak along the river and scale a slippery inflatable wall.

The event, billed as an “urban adventure” by organiser Rat Race Adventure Sports, started and finished at the new Riverside Museum.

Rat Race’s managing director, Jim Mee, said the aim was for competitors to enjoy a run with a difference.

He said: “The 10k run was broken up with obstacles. Competitors could run or walk the distance, so it was an event that could be enjoyed by people at all levels of fitness.”
