BBC Scotland journalist Nick Sheridan dies aged 32 as 'devastated' colleagues pay tribute

BBC Scotland have confirmed that award-winning journalist Nick Sheridan has died

BBC Scotland presenter and journalist Nick Sheridan has been hailed as “hugely talented” following his death at the age of 32.

The death of the award-winning reporter after a “short illness” was confirmed on Thursday by BBC Scotland.

Originally from Wexford in Ireland, Mr Sheridan had previously worked for STV and RTE in Dublin before joining BBC Scotland in 2018, where he presented shows including the flagship news programme Reporting Scotland, as well as the Nine and Seven Days.

BBC Scotland head of news and current affairs Gary Smith said in a statement: "We’re devastated to hear the news our colleague and friend, Nick Sheridan, has died.

“Nick has been a wonderful colleague. He was a hugely talented journalist, presenter and author – and one of those rare people who light up the lives of everyone around them.

"Funny, clever, kind. A lovely man.

"Our hearts go out to his parents, to his partner and to all his family and friends.”

Mr Sheridan was a regular presenter of the Drivetime show on BBC Radio Scotland, and had been working as the BBC’s consumer affairs correspondent in Scotland.

Politicians from across the party divide paid heartfelt tributes to Mr Sheridan.

First Minister Humza Yousaf posted on social media: “Very sad news. My thoughts are with Nick’s friends and family at what will be an incredibly difficult time. Nick was a talented journalist and author and will be greatly missed.

Former first minister Nicola Sturgeon said in post on X: “So terribly sad to read this. It is truly awful. Nick was young, talented, vivacious, and full of potential. What a horrible, senseless loss. My thoughts are with his family, colleagues and many friends.”

Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar added: “This is absolutely heart-breaking news. Nick was a phenomenally talented young journalist, well-liked and with a bright future ahead of him.”

Scottish Tories leader Douglas Ross posted: “This is terribly sad news. Nick was a superb journalist who embodied the best traditions of journalism.”

Mr Sheridan is the author of three books – ‘Breaking News: How to tell what’s real from what’s rubbish’, ‘The Case of the Runaway Brain’ and ‘The Case of the Phantom Treasure’.
