Stephen Fry ‘took cocaine at Dundee University’

The Courier reports how the comedian admitted taking the class A drug to cope with booze-fuelled visits to the university in order to perform his duties as rector.

He also revealed that he fell asleep three times during a meeting of its court on one of the occasions that he had taken the drug at the university.

Mr Fry has maintained his links with Dundee University and has returned to serve on the judging panel for the yearly Dundee Book Prize.

He details the visit to the university in 1993 during which he fell asleep, in his new autobiography More Fool Me.

He writes: “I dropped off three times: the first time Jim Duncan (the former rector’s aassessor), by my side, woke me up; the next two times I was awoken by a change of voice or something else.”

He added that he had then attended Pete’s Bar in the city, where he delivered a speech to first year students.

He added: “As always, there seemed to be some deep desire amongst the corpus studenti to get me completely hammered.

“At last, tottering and with the help of a couple of lines in the bog, I was escorted to the station...managed to sleep straight away, which despite the lines (both railway and stimulant) is something of a miracle.”

The actor also uses the book to apologise ‘unreservedly, to the owners, managers or representatives of the noble and ignoble premises and to the undreds of private homes, offices, car dashboards, tables, mantelpieces and available polished surfaces that could so easily have been added to this list of shame’.

In his autobiography he outlines his battle with drugs and alcohol, also revealing that he took the class A drug while at Buckingham Palace.
