Singer to help Aids fight

ROCK singer Annie Lennox has been appointed as an official spokeswoman for the UN agency fighting HIV/Aids.

Accepting the position as UNAIDS goodwill ambassador yesterday, she pledged to address the "daily brutality faced by millions of women and girls" suffering from the disease.

The musician achieved fame with the Eurythmics, and her "SING" campaign supports Aids-infected women in Africa.

Lennox said: "If we are to end the cycle of human devastation triggered by the Aids epidemic, we must address the rights of women and girls and challenge their second-class citizen status, which puts them at greater risk of HIV."
