Duke and Duchess of Cambridge could attend Braemar

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge could make their first appearance in Scotland since the birth of their son, Prince George, at this weekend’s Braemar Gathering in Aberdeenshire.

The Braemar Gathering, held at The Princess Royal and Duke of Fife Memorial Park, is seen as the biggest event in the Highland Games calendar.

The Royal Family have a long history of attending the Braemar Gathering. The Queen, who is patron of the games was in attendance at last year’s games along with the Duke of Edinburgh and Prince Charles, the Duke of Rothesay.

Steve Harris, chief executive of VisitAberdeen said: “The Royal Family has regularly attended the Braemar Gathering since Queen Victoria first attended in 1848; making it the world’s most famous Highland Games.

“If the Duke and Duchess were to choose to attend the Gathering this year, it would bring an increased global focus to the area as pictures of the Royal Family at Braemar are syndicated around the world.”

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were said to have taken Prince George to visit the family of the Duke’s mother Diana for the first time last week to commemorate the anniversary of her death.

Steve Harris would welcome the Royal couple at the Aberdeenshire event, adding: “The people of Royal Deeside would welcome them with their traditional warmth, as I am sure would the thousands of visitors who attend the Gathering every year.”

“Should the younger generations of the Royal family attend this year’s gathering, it would give Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire another boost of publicity.”

“Generations of the Royal family have attended the Braemar Gathering since 1848 and Her Majesty The Queen is the current patron of the Gathering. Visitors from across the globe come to Royal Deeside each year to find out why this part of the world has been the secluded holiday choice for the Royal Family for 165 years.”
