FILM: THE HATEFUL EIGHT

Those who liked Tarantino’s blood-spattered slavery epic Django Unchained will find a similarly appealing jaunt in The Hateful Eight. Despite opening against the new Star Wars movie earlier this month, the film has enjoyed solid returns and even better reviews, which praise its consideration of race relations reflected in the present-day United States and tense, witty plot focused on a group of snowed-in misfits.

The Hateful Eight’s cast includes screen stalwarts Kurt Russell and Samuel L Jackson, but you won’t find it at any of the larger cinema chains outside London due to it being filmed on 70mm reel.

Aberdeen’s twee Belmont Filmhouse is one of the few locations where you can see the film in Scotland, with no less than three showings per day.

The Plymouth-born pal of fellow singer Ed Sheeran plays Glasgow’s Queen Margaret Union tonight, with his 2015 hit “Wasn’t Expecting That” sure to be a feature of the evening. The up-and-coming artist was little-known outside of Ireland until he was signed by Sheeran’s Gingerbread Man Records and re-released his single last year as the first artist to be signed on that label.

With gigs in other UK cities so far described as intimate and emotional, Lawson’s Glasgow visit is the only Scottish date remaining on his UK-wide tour, with tickets for the standing-only gig selling fast.

PANTOMIME: SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS

Edinburgh’s King’s Theatre hosts the enduring children’s tale Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs, starring Allan Stuart, Andy Gray and Grant Stott. Having performed twice a day since Saturday 28 November last year, the Christmas special is set to wrap on Sunday 17 January, with only 7pm performances scheduled for tonight and tomorrow evening.

Critics and families alike have been enthused by the pantomime’s lavish costumes and outlandish comedy so far, with the Edinburgh Evening News proclaiming it as “miles better than all the others”. Tickets are priced between £14 and £31, with seats still available for tonight’s performance at the time of publication.
