What's On In Scotland: Three things to do tonight

Indie stalwarts The Maccabees make their way to Glasgow this Friday.

MUSIC: THE MACCABEES

Whilst their indie scene contemporaries may have faded into obscurity or disbanded completely, The Maccabees have surged on, putting out a constant stream of well-received albums. It’s been nearly a decade since their breakout debut record, Colour It In, and their latest album, 2015’s Marks To Prove It, proves that the London-based band are still very much into melancholy-tinged indie pop, a sound which, though a bit staid these days, has an eager following. The Maccabees are no stranger to Glasgow’s iconic Barrowlands, and are sure to be met with rapturous support on their return.

FILM: CINEMATIC: SPANISH AND LATIN AMERICAN SHORT FILM NIGHT

Whilst Oscar season means we are spoilt for choice when it comes to the local multiplex, Glasgow’s Centre for Contemporary Arts have put together a short-film selection with a difference. Their programme of Spanish language films – curated from Spain, Argentina, Columbia and Mexico – are linked by the theme of the consequences of overlooking. Short films from established Spanish directors including Toni Bestard and José Esteban Alenda will be screened alongside lesser known works from across Latin America. Intermissions will allow filmgoers time to discuss the films with fellow attendees.

EVENT: FIRST FOOT TO ARRIVAL

Edinburgh’s arts community looks to offer a helping hand in the continuing refugee crisis with a night of fundraising at Scotland’s new writing theatre. Contemporary playwrights, including Alan Bissett and Stef Smith, will be presenting new works on the theme of “arrivals” and “welcome” as well as games, poetry, puppetry and live music from Aly Macrae. The night held in the Traverse Bar and Cafe is free to attend with voluntary donations going to city-based charities Refugee Survival Trust and the Scottish Detainee Visitors. A chance to play a small part in aiding those in need as well as enjoying the company of some of Scotland’s finest creative talent.
