Theatre review: Shoot The Women First

There's some very welcome funny lines at the outset of this dry jet-black comedy about mercenaries by stand-up Mary Bourke.

Star rating: **

Venue: The Stand Comedy Club 5 & 6 (Venue 319)

Initially, cleverly presented as a talk by Cantle Global Security, Bourke and Simon Clayton take turns to answer some FAQs with disarming honesty about the shady world of military contractors.

Swiftly, however, the narrative becomes increasingly fractured, the stories harder to follow and you can sense the performers increasingly lose confidence in the material as they rattle through it, resulting in a mishandled ending that leaves the audience wondering: “is that it?”. Unfortunately, it is.

Until 28 August. Today 12:20pm.
