T in the Park review: Miaoux Miaoux

PLAYING at the same time as the Happy Mondays meant Glasgow-based producer Julian Corrie, aka Miaoux Miaoux, played to a half-full BBC Introducing tent. Backed by a full band, Miaoux Miaoux launched into his eclectic set with a confidence belying his youthfulness. Although impossible to pigeonhole the producer’s sound, his vocals are at times redolent of Hot Chip, whilst the sweeping electronica brings to mind Aberfeldy.

Miaoux Miaoux - BBC Introducing

Rating: ***

With Corrie joined on stage by members of now-defunct bands Dananananaykroyd and Mitchell Museum, the set takes on a fuller sound compared to Corrie’s one-man shows, with Anna Miles contributing on vocals. Edinburgh hip hop artist Profisee joins the band for a newer song, giving a lush electronic soundscape a gritty edge, possibly hinting at a future direction for the band. The additional members provide some respite for Corrie, who is content to let the backing band allow songs to flourish.

Although there’s nothing wrong with Miaoux Miaoux - they put on a great show and there’s clear talent - it feels as though there’s something missing from the band’s set. Perhaps it’s the lack of audience diminishing the atmosphere, or the occasional technical faults, but on this showing, Miaoux Miaox may have to step up their game in order to continue winning audiences over, as they have done so successfully for so long.
