The star-studded cast of SAS: Red Notice also includes Hannah John-Kamen,Tom Wilkinson, Andy Serkis, Noel Clarke, Tom Hopper and Owain Yeoman.

The trailer has been released after Heughan began filming the sixth season of Outlander, which is made in a converted warehouse complex in Cumbernauld, Lanarkshire.

The 40-year-old actor’s new film, which is said to be an authentic portrayal of an emergency response to a train hijacking, is also said to see Heughan and Rose conduct “an epic battle between a good psychopath and a bad psychopath.”

Based on the best-selling novel by former SAS soldier Andy McNab, the film follows the events which unfold after Tom and his partner, Dr Sophie Hart, get caught up in a gripping hostage drama en route to Paris, where he is planning to propose.

The synopsis for the film states, which will premiere on 12 March, states: “When the train is deep inside the Channel Tunnel, heavily armed mercenaries, led by Grace, seize control of it and hold everyone hostage.

"Grace threatens to blow up the Channel Tunnel and declare economic war on a government that has its fair share of secrets to keep.

"Unarmed and cut off from his counter terror team, Tom is the only hope that Sophie and the other passengers have to make it out alive.

"To save them he must embrace the unique psychology that makes Grace such a formidable adversary.”

Speaking about SAS: Red Notice in a Total Film interview, Heughan said: "I've done a lot of action on the projects I've worked on, but never like this," the star further explained to Total Film.

"There's some crazy stuff in there. Talk to Andy McNab about how to kill a man with a phone, and he'll tell you how to do it. And he'll tell you in full detail. It's kind of scary!"

Writer and producer Laurence Malkin, who spent a decade working on an adaptation of Mcab’s book, said of Heughan’s character: ““It sounds very weird. People think of Hannibal Lecter, and you’re slicing and dicing, and drinking chianti, and eating people’s brains and whatnot.

"But in truth, it’s a spectrum. There’s good psychopaths. There’s bad psychopaths. There’s functional. There’s dysfunctional.”

Born in Balmaclellan, in Dumfries and Galloway, Heughan moved to Edinburgh when he was 12 and studied at the then Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow.
