Runners in Speed of Light spectacle pull out over safety fears

ORGANISERS of a sound and light show being staged on Arthur’s Seat in Edinburgh for the next few weeks insist all participants will be safe on the landmark – despite concerns being raised about the prospects of people injuring themselves in the dark.

Some 200 runners fitted with light suits will follow routes around the hill, watched by about 800 walkers heading off at different points.

But about one in three of those who signed up to be a runner in the Speed of Light event is thought to have pulled out ahead of its official opening tonight. One runner who contacted The Scotsman after withdrawing said she was concerned about a lack of preparation and poor organisation after taking part in several training sessions.

But project manager Christina Armstrong said: “We have a robust safety and medical plan, with around 140 staff on duty every night. All our team-leaders have been fully trained and we will also have stewards all over the pathways on the hill.”
