Return to sender: Rare Wallace document on display in Scotland

Culture secretary Fiona Hyslop displays a 700-year-old letter believed to have once been in the possession of William Wallace, which has been returned to Scotland.

The document is now on long-term loan to the National Records of Scotland after an agreement was reached with the National Archives in Kew.

The letter, from King Philip of France to his officials at the Vatican, requests: “We command you that you ask the Supreme Pontiff to consider with favour our beloved William le Wallace of Scotland, knight, with regard to those things which concern him that he has to expedite.”
